In KS2 (years 3-6) there are ongoing assessments throughout the year, to ensure that the children are on track, enabling staff to help those who are struggling and to stretch those who are finding the work easy. Throughout KS2 the children are streamed for Maths Investigation lessons, enabling younger, gifted and talented pupils to challenge themselves by working with older children.
In Year 6 the children are being prepared for the transition to secondary school; so they have to manage their time; homework is given on different days for different lengths of time; they make decisions about their work, working independently, deciding how to present their work - they do a lot of personal research creating personal projects. At Ashbrooke we follow the National Curriculum so the children sit the National Curriculum Standard Assessment Tests (SATs) at the end of the year, as well as, where appropriate, practising verbal and non-verbal reasoning in preparation for children planning to sit exams for private schools.
In Maths lessons most of the work is building on work done throughout the school - focusing on applications and problem solving.
In English there is a strong emphasis on grammar and punctuation, especially as used within their writing, not just in discrete lessons.
During Year 6 topics covered include:
- Ancient Egypt
- Victorian Britain
- Modern Britain
- Saving the Environment
- Electric Circuits
- Reversible and Irreversible Changes
