From Year 1 children are taught in a more formal learning environment. Children are introduced to various learning resources and opportunities are given to encourage independent learning.
Subject areas become more defined particularly Maths and English. Science and Humanities are taught through cross-curricular topic work.
This academic year Reception, Class 1 and Class 2 are following the same topics. This will enable us to share our planning, resources and to arrange joint visits and visitors to complement our work. Although we plan a general overview of the topics, each class does work at a differentiated level. Topic work generally covers History, Geography, Science, P.S.H.C.E. and sometimes R.E. Classes 1 and 2 will also plan some of their Art and Design Technology together.
Autumn term - Ourselves and Other Animals
Light and Dark
Spring term - Houses and Homes
Who's the King of the Castle?
Summer term - I do like to be beside the Sea-side
The partnership between home and school in the children's learning is very important. There should already be a home/school reading routine established which will be continued. Children will be given a weekly homework task and a list of spellings to learn at an appropriate level.
